Explore Imperial Village - Zhaojiabao

In the remote mountain area of Zhangpu County, Fujian Province exist such a traditional Ming-Dynasty-style castle named Zhaojiabao. It is said that Zhaojiabao is the epitome of ancient capital city of Song Dynasty which was built by descendants of royal Zhao family. Surprisely, some unknown royal customs still remain in Zhaojiabao. It is the best places for your educational China tours.

In 1982, cultural relics scholars discovered Zhaojiabao accidently. Surrounded by two city walls, Zhaojiabao has four main gates facing four directiongs. The city was seperated into three sections: living section, etiquette section, and garden section which are dotted with bridges, pavillions, ponds, temples and other public buildings inside. The harmonious and simple construting style in the Zhaojiabao is very rare in the south of Fujiang province.

According to analysis and historical documents, the villagers are the descendants of Song Dynasty. In Zhaojiabau (also right for AFFORDABLE china tours ) was kept a family genealogy of Zhao with history of several hundred years. The title of this family genealogy is “Bianjing Royal Clan - Zhao Family Genealogy”. Bianjing (now Kaifeng in Henan Province) was once the capital city of Song Dynasty. The family genealogy records an event: “in the beginning of 1291, Song troop with the number of 200,000 soilders was attacked by army of Yuan Dynasty (1206AD-1368AD). Lu Xiufu, prime minister, feared that nine-year-ld emporer may be caught and suffered insult, so he picked him up in his arms and jumped from a cliff into the sea, killing them both. While Zhao Ruohe, Lord of Fujian, got through the close siege and escaped Zhangzhou and lived a recluse life.” In the genealogy, even the escape route was clearly recorded. Avoiding to be chasing by Yuan army, Zhao Ruohe and members of his clan changed their family name from Zhao to Huang. And then their former family name Zhao was recovered in Ming Dynasty (1368-1644).

The most famous construction in Zhaojiabao is Wanbi Lou named after an allusion. Wanbi Lou founction as a defense fortress. According to the description of local residents, Wanbi Lou was built in Ming Dynasty to resist the attack of Japanese pirates. Wanbi Lou played an important role in protecting the Zhaojiabu from invasion of Japanese pirates.

Some traditional customs was still kept in Zhaojiabu. ‘Chi Ding Zhao’ was held in every Lantern Festival. All wifes and husbands who get married or give birth to babies in the last year should feast all men above 16 years old in ancestral temple. ‘Chi Ding Zhao’ tell all people that the new members enter Zhao Family. ‘Xing She’ is another important custom and is held in the eighteenth of the first lunar month every year. All the Buddhist statues will be carried out from temples to parade around the village. In the past, the pictures of 18 emperors were enshrined in ancestral temple and worhipped on the day of Lunar Festival. But the precious pictures were lost during the period cultural revolution.
